During Syndergaard’s second big league start, he had a career first. He beaned Carlos Gomez in the head with a 97 MPH heater. While it was clearly unintentional, it was a scary moment for all involved. While Gomez remained on the ground in pain, Thor stood in front of the mound looking wide eyed and bewildered.
You never like to see something like that happen in a game, especially to someone who plays the game with so much excitement and energy, and most importantly the right way. Gomez is one of the good young stars in the game, and Syndergaard is hoping to be an elite pitcher. The truth is, unfortunately, things like this happen in baseball. The diagnosis of just a contusion is great news for Gomez, the Brewers, as well as the sport and Syndergaard’s psyche. While he was able to regain his composure and finish out the inning, it was no doubt weighing on him.
