The Braves beat the Mets 5-3 tonight. Everybody take a deep breath and relax. It’s 5 games into the season. No, the Mets aren’t hitting yet, but they’ve also faced Scherzer, Zimmermann, Strasburg and Teheran. Yes, we lost our closer for the next 80 games due to being unaware of what he is putting into his own body, but that’s fine, Familia’s better. Oh yeah, and the Braves sure as hell aren’t going 162-0!
Considering the competition Gee is facing to remain in the rotation, he surely needs to have better outings than the one displayed tonight. After cruising through the 1st inning, he started off the 2nd by continuing the ownership that Freddie Freeman has over him with a solo shot to center. He settled down after that, until the 5th, when the flood gates opened. The Braves doubled him to death, taking a 5-0 lead, sending him to an early shower.
Teheran was flat out dealing tonight, which seems like a nightly occurrence for all starting pitchers against this Mets offense right now. Then again, they have faced stud pitchers in 4 of 5 games to start the season. If not for landing awkwardly and tweaking his knee after a pitch in the 7th inning, the Mets probably wouldn’t have put any runs on the board against him. But that did happen, and the Mets did score, 3 times in fact, no thanks to their bats.
For someone who has made his first 2 major league appearance in this series, Gilmartin sure looks like a guy for the Mets out of the bullpen. He was able to retire Freeman both last night and again tonight, not to mention the other Braves he faced. The mere fact that he is able to get Freeman out is deserving of a 10 year extension right now!
